FEATURES OF THE
GATEWAY CENTERS

Library Services will be expanded at the Antioch Library and at a new library center at Prewett Park. Visitors will be able to browse a well-selected local collection of print and multi-media titles and access all Contra Costa County Library collections. Self-service options at Prewett Park will make it easy to pick up reserved books, borrow new items and renew or return checked-out materials.

Technology Hubs will offer more than 25 computer stations, a color printer and a large-screen video display. In these areas, visitors can access email, view or order any item from the Contra Costa County Library collection, conduct research, print documents or simply browse the Web. For some, these hubs may be the only way of using Internet in a world that requires online transactions and communications. But the spaces are more than just free computer time. The hubs will offer opportunities for technology learning through small-group classes and individualized tutoring at both locations.

Learning Zones will be specially designed for younger readers and their families. These areas will be furnished to encourage and promote reading skills and will feature age-appropriate books and learning materials. They will include a magnetic learning wall for practicing words and letters by manipulating small objects as well as toys and learning games. Early learning workstations will provide a worthwhile addition to the current children’s area in the downtown library, with hardware and software specifically designed for young learners.

Living Rooms will offer comfortable surroundings to read, chat or enjoy a cup of coffee. Chairs and tables will be available for visitors to sit and use the Wi-Fi network.

FINANCING THE VISION
The Gateway Centers will take shape through renovations of the existing Antioch Library and development of a new learning and technology center within the newly constructed Prewett Park Community Center. This complex has been planned and designed with the generous $26 million investment by residents within the Prewett Park Mello-Roos District.

An additional $2 million in private funding will make it possible for the Gateway Centers to become focal points of our flourishing Antioch community. In both locations, the new library facilities will take advantage of existing buildings and infrastructure – developing and equipping 1500-square-feet of available space in the Prewett Park Community Center and modernizing the interior of the 18th Street library structure.

These economies of scale and forward-looking approaches will leverage precious community resources for maximum benefit citywide.
